Custom-fitted in-the-ear instruments were gaining in popularity. The components used were produced by Siemens, for the first time in Germany.

In addition to the technology, more attention was now being paid to design. A growing variety of shells became available, differing in terms of size, shape and color. The most successful developments even won prizes. At "Design 85 Stuttgart", Siemens' STRATOS BTE received the Industrial Forum's "Good Industrial Design" award from the Design-Center-Stuttgart.
